Happy Grocery & Dollar Store: 1065 West Granville Avenue, Chicago, IL

Sandeep, as of a month ago, is a Computer Science graduate from IIT with no jobs, no prospects, and no interest in moving back to India. Sandeep hopped the waters from Mumbai to Texas two years ago with the intention of earning himself an American degree and crossing back once he did so. Now that he gets to “face reality,” he’s a little less sure. In the meantime, Sandeep works the weekend and night shifts at Happy Grocery for the owner “who has lived here forty-seven years, and still doesn’t speak English.” He does accounting for the owner “because it’s easy,” and writes short stories (in English and Farsi) “because it’s hard.”
